The Patent Office has changed its name
The UK Patent Office has changed its trading name to the UK Intellectual Property Office, commonly shortened to UK-IPO.
The change of name is to reflect the fact that the UK-IPO handles more than just patents, and is similar to the names given to the central intellectual property offices of many major countries. It also contrasts with the European Patent Office which handles only patents.
It is well known that the UK-IPO is responsible for registration of trade marks and designs in the UK. In addition, the UK-IPO handles matters relating to pharmaceutical supplementary protection certificates, unregistered design right, copyright, licensing, designations of geographical origin, protection of national emblems and internationally recognised symbols, and advising on proposed IP legislation.
This is just a change of name: it does not represent any change in the operation of the office.
